Religious Significance
• One of the Char Dham (Badrinath, Dwarka, Puri, Rameswaram) and Chota Char Dham (Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath,Badrinath).
• Dedicated to Lord Vishnu, worshipped as Badri Narayan.
• The temple is believed to have been established by Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century.
• Legend: Lord Vishnu meditated here, and Goddess Lakshmi took the form of a Badri tree to shield him. Hence the name
Badrinath.
• Considered the holiest Vaishnavite shrine in the Himalayas.
Temple Architecture
• Style: Traditional North Indian (Nagare style).
• Facade: Brightly painted with arched windows, resembling a Buddhist monastery (due to past Tibetan influence).
• Main Shrine (Garbha Griha): Houses a black stone (Shaligram) idol of Lord Vishnu seated in meditation.
• Tapt Kund: A natural hot spring near the temple where pilgrims bathe before darshan.
Rituals & Worship
• Daily rituals: Shringar, Abhishek, Archana, Aarti.
• The idol is worshipped by Rawal (chief priest), traditionally a Namboodiri Brahmin from Kerala.
• In winters, the idol is moved to Joshimath (Narsingh Temple) for worship.
• Opening & Closing: Temple opens in April/May (Akshaya Tritiya) and closes in October/November (Vijayadashami/Kartik Purnima).
