Mythological & Devotional Significance of Kedarkantha
Kedarkantha is not only a beautiful trekking summit but also holds deep mythological and spiritual importance in Hindu tradition. The very name “Kedarkantha” translates to “Throat of Lord Shiva”.
According to local legends, Lord Shiva once meditated at the Kedarkantha peak. He chose
this high Himalayan summit for its peaceful surroundings and divine energy. The spiritual
silence of the mountains is believed to have helped him in deep meditation.
🕉 Connection with Kedarnath
It is said that during the time when the Pandavas (from the Mahabharata) were seeking Lord Shiva’s blessings to atone for their sins after the Kurukshetra war, Shiva tried to avoid them and took the form of a bull.
• While moving away from Kedarkantha towards Kedarnath, he left behind his throat (kantha) at this place.
• Hence, the mountain got the name Kedarkantha.
